I’m grateful to have been recently featured in CanvasRebel, where I had the opportunity to share more about my journey, not just as a chef and business owner, but as someone who has grown through both the challenges and the successes that come with this industry.
The conversation touched on a lot of the moments that have shaped who I am today.
A Journey Built Over Time
One of the things I always come back to is that there isn’t one defining moment that creates success. It’s the accumulation of experiences, the long hours, the risks, the failures, and the small wins along the way.
Growing up in the restaurant business, I was introduced to hard work early on. That foundation has stayed with me throughout my career and continues to influence how I approach both leadership and creativity today.
“Resilience, for me, isn’t one single story. It’s the thread that connects every chapter of my life.”
Resilience Isn’t Just One Moment
One of the themes we talked about in the interview was resilience.
For me, resilience isn’t tied to one specific event. It’s something that shows up over and over again, in the ability to keep moving forward, to adapt, and to continue building even when things don’t go as planned.
It’s what allows you to start again, to learn from mistakes, and to grow into the next version of yourself.
Growth, Creativity, and Finding Your Own Path
Another part of the conversation focused on finding your own voice.
In an industry where there are so many talented people and so many different paths to take, it’s easy to compare yourself to others. But over time, I’ve learned that growth comes from leaning into your own strengths, your own experiences, and your own perspective.
That’s where creativity really lives.
“What makes Johnny D’s special isn’t just a great waffle or a benedict, it’s the spirit behind it: creativity, consistency, and a genuine belief that food can make people feel seen.”
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Taking the time to reflect on the journey is always meaningful.
There are moments that stand out, building Johnny D’s alongside my father, continuing that legacy, and continuing to evolve both personally and professionally. Each step has played a role in shaping where I am today.
At the same time, I’m always looking forward. There’s always more to learn, more to create, and more ways to grow.
“Every challenge teaches you something about yourself. You realize that leadership isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about showing up with honesty, humility, and heart.”
